Top 10 Reggae/Dancehall Songs of 2011

The year 2011 was a massive year reggae and dancehall music. We saw several young acts making massive strides on the airwaves and on the charts, and also several industry veterans making a comeback.

For the most part of the year, the charts were dominated by heavy weights such as Vybz Kartel, Mavado, Sean Paul and newcomer Popcaan.

Other artistes continues to release good material including I-Octane, Khago and Assassin aka Agent Sasco.

Urban Islandz compiled the list of top 10 reggae/dancehall tracks for the year 2011. The list was compiled through extensive research on the impact of each song globally and locally in Jamaica during 2011.

Among the criteria that we take into consideration are airplay on radio and television, online plays on Youtube and Facebook etc, impact in dancehall sessions and clubs and also sales.

Alicia Keys currently recording in Jamaica

American Grammy-winning R&B superstar, Alicia Keys has made Jamaica her temporary home, as she will embark on a recording project in the island.

The songstress, known for several classics such as Fallin, A Woman’s Worth and Superwoman arrived in the island on Saturday for music-related purposes. According to media reports, Keys began attending recording sessions at Geejam Studios in Portland.

The studio complex houses three deluxe cabins, a self-contained villa, spa, gym, swimming pool and restaurant. Additionally, reports claim that the privacy Geejam studios offer assured Keys safe accommodation.

It remains unknown the nature of said recordings that Alicia Keys has engaged in, what projects she’ll work on while in the island or how long she’ll stay in the island.

Keys graces Jamaican shores previously; performing on the final night of the 2004 Jazz and Blues Festival to high acclaim.

Reggae star Jah Cure and his wife Kamila McDonald are expecting their first child.

McDonald made the announcement via Facebook, while sharing photos of her advance pregnancy with fans.

“Hello wonderful people. Each of you have touched my heart in such a special way. A continued thank you for all your sweet posts and comments… it surely has made my day in some hectic times! I’ve been extremely busy in a full-time grad-programme at UC Berkeley’s School of Journalism in California and loving every minute of it,” she said.


“On top of that I wanted to share with you that Cure and I, are expecting our first baby very soon! I’m sharing a few pictures I took yesterday. I’ve been enjoying everything about this journey; after all you’ll only be pregnant with your first, once! Nuff love and blessings to you all and I’ll be sure to keep you all posted!”

Jah Cure, whose real name is Siccature Alcock and Kamila McDonald, a former Miss Jamaica contestant, wed in a lavish ceremony last summer at the Tryall Clubs in Hanover.

Reggae/dancehall star I-Octane is gearing up to drop his debut album Cry To The Nation due in stores on February 14.

The 16-track album will be release in collaboration with VP Records and Scikron, owned by Robert Livingston.

Guest features on the album comes from the likes of Agent Sasco on Missing You, Alborosie on Space For All Of Us and Tarrus Riley on All We Need Is Love.

I-Octane recently renewed his Digicel sponsorship deal for 2012. Making it the second year he will serve as the sole Brand Ambassador for the mobile giant.

Bounty Killer & Gabriel “Lollipop” Fans Outrage

Vybz Kartel was ridiculed earlier this year by many dancehall artistes for saying that several other deejays are following him by release their own fr*aky songs. The now incarcerated deejay may have a point. Dancehall great Bounty Killer has teamed with newcomer Gabriel on a track called “Lollipop,” a remake of the sort to the 1964 classic by Millie Small. “She request the lollipop, instant the party stop, a mi an sally dat round a di holly back, mek her heart it go giddy up, super size lollipop she naan give it up, she have a passion fi it that’s why she big it up, so any weh di lollipop de she dig it up,” Bounty Killer deejay over an old school dancehall beat. Since the release of the track this week, dancehall fans have been very vocal about their feelings. “Really Bounty WTF,” a fan said on Twitter. “what !! The !! F**k !!! is this ! after making this bounty need go inna grave? smh !!” one fan post on Youtube. “The song fre*ky but mi love it,” a fan told Urban Islandz on Twitter. “Gal voice annoying and mi neva expect Bounty fi do a song like this, but a long time Beenie dem seh him fr*aky,” another fan told Urban Islandz on Facebook.

Rihanna To Premiere New Track “You Da One” Friday

Rihanna is currently sitting at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart with her dance smash “We Found Love,” for a second week. Now the Bajan pop princess is getting ready to release a another single “You Da One,” off her upcoming album Talk That Talk. The Dr. Luke-produced single will be premiered on Friday and hit iTunes on Sunday at midnight. Rihanna’s sixth studio album includes contributions from the likes of Bangladesh, No I.D., The-Dream, Ester Dean, Stargate, Hit-Boy, and more. Her mentor Jay-Z is the only featured guest on the record.
Reggae/dancehall sensation I-Octane is slated to drop his new EP “Straight From The Heart” on December 6, ahead of his new upcoming album due early next year. Straight From The Heart will be release digitally on iTune and hard copies will be available at a later date. According to I-Octane’s camp, three of the singles on the EP was recorded in the United States and one in St. Kitts, connecting the singjay with overseas producers. I-Octane is currently in New York for upcoming shows this weekend. The singjay release his new music video for “Burn Dem Bridge” this week. Watch video below.
